HISTORY

In the annals of Lombok's history, the Majapahit Empire casts a significant shadow. Following the triumph of Gajah Mada, Prime Minister of the Javanese king, over the Balinese king, in a decisive battle in Bedulu in 1343, Lombok fell under Majapahit rule. The empire's influence was palpable, with its capital first established at Samprangan before being relocated to Gelgel. Gelgel emerged as the paramount kingdom of Lombok, reigning until the latter half of the 17th century.

The imprint of Majapahit rule on Lombok was profound, heralding an era of cultural fusion and exchange. Javanese customs permeated the island, leaving an indelible mark on architecture, dance, theatre, literature, painting, sculpture, and even the traditional wayang puppet theatre. The rich tapestry of Javanese culture became intertwined with the fabric of Lombok's society, shaping its identity for centuries to come.

However, amidst this cultural assimilation, pockets of resistance endured. The "Bali Aga," or Original Balinese, staunchly clung to their ancestral traditions, residing in isolated villages scattered across the island. These communities preserved a distinct way of life, offering a glimpse into Lombok's ancient past amidst the tide of change brought by Majapahit rule.
